There have been assurances that progress is being made, but for those who invested heavily in song libraries on earlier versions of SingStar, this still rankles. The problem? Only a fraction, a year down the line, have actually become available.

You could, through simple app wizardry, use your mobile phone as your mic.Ĭustomers who had bought add-on tracks for the PlayStation 3 version of SingStar were told that they’d be able to download them for free on the PlayStation 4 version as and when they became available. This time, too, you didn’t even need to invest in microphones. A new disc was launched, bringing the game to the PlayStation 4 for the first time.

The bigger relaunch, though, came last year.

Sure, not everyone wanted to download the core game (grumbles were duly noted), but the change of pricing mechanic was an attempt to invigorate the series in the era of downloadable content and in-app purchase. It made the core game free and downloadable, and you just bought the songs you wanted. But as things slowed down, Sony changed things around. The official statement did add that “no other songs except those listed are impacted, and our large library of songs remains fully accessible”, and that “as a true PlayStation classic, we are always looking at how best to ensure SingStar remains one of the most beloved franchises around and we’d like to reassure our fans that we are fully committed to supporting the SingStar franchise in the future”.įor some time, SingStar was a solid success. The list of games can be found here. Questions as to what happens when you attempt to re-download songs affects that you’ve already bought before from SingStore were not being answered in the commenas underneath the post. In total, 683 – yep – songs are being removed. The most recent news update, in November 2016, actually listed songs that were now being removed from the service. However, the latest addition of new songs to the SingStore came back in March 2016. In days of old, updates were regular and new discs were released. Whilst there’s been no official confirmation, it seems Sony has all but given up on the game.

Back in October 2015, we took a look at Sony’s karaoke videogame, SingStar, that since its PS4 release has enjoyed barely any updates, nor a quick conversion of songs from its PS3 catalogue. You’d be better off whipping out your iPod, queueing up your favourite playlist and handing out the hair brushes instead, for a karaoke experience that actually delivers on the promise of an ‘ultimate party’.Just thought this was worth a quick revisit. With a disappointing playlist that struggles to venture beyond the confines of a single genre, the nonexistence of any multiplayer modes, and the barely functioning peripherals, you’d be wise to give the newest entry in the SingStar franchise a miss. I downloaded the app on my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and experienced no lag or issues other than mic volume, but your mileage may vary. But in relative terms, it’s a free alternative that functions on par with the branded hardware, so that at least is a bit of a money saver.

If you don’t have a mic, you can download the free app on your smartphone that will connect to your active SingStar game and turn it into an additional peripheral, and you’ll be pleased to know that it works just as well as the USB counterparts - you still won’t be able to bloody well hear anything. Crank the volume up on the d-pad all you like, no one will hear your caterwauling, and isn’t that the whole point of karaoke?

You can still salvage the party with a handful of decent songs and enough beers, right? You don’t need a bit of software to teach you the meaning of sharing. I don’t know what the twenty-somethings draped over one another in the fancy new menus are doing, but judging by the absence of party based musical antics, I’ll tell you what - it’s not singing. Online Battle Mode is a relic of the past as well, and the feature has been retroactively patched out from the free PS3 app in case you had any funny ideas about trying to actually engage with other human beings and have a bit of a laugh. Everything that made SingStar a party affair has vanished Pass the Mic, Duets, Medleys - even the difficulty settings - they’ve all been dumped in favour of a basic 1 to 2-player singalong. But the biggest kick in the teeth is the fact that all of the party features have been unceremoniously stripped away.
